A BRIEF HISTORY
BIG APPLE AGENCY, INC. will be celebrating its 33rd anniversary in 2020. Founded in 1987 by Ms. Lily Chen and Dr. Luc Kwanten, the agency was originally known as BIG APPLE LTC CONSULTING. In December 1989, the name was changed to BIG APPLE TUTTLE-MORI AGENCY when it began working with Tuttle-Mori Agency Japan. The agency represented foreign proprietors around the world in the Chinese language markets in both Mainland China (Simplified Chinese) and Taiwan (Traditional/Complex Chinese). In 2010 with the expansion into the Southeast Asian territories, the company name was officially changed to BIG APPLE AGENCY, INC.
There was no copyright law in either China or Taiwan protecting authors’ translation rights when the agency was founded. In November 1992, China and Taiwan enacted copyright legislation that protected the rights of foreign authors against unauthorized reproduction and unauthorized translation of their works. Subsequently China became a member of the Berne Convention and other international agreements on copyright and intellectual property protection. In spite of the five-year long handicap, the agency was able to enter into proper translation agreements in China as well as in Taiwan.
BIG APPLE AGENCY, INC. handles translation rights into Mainland China – Simplified Chinese character rights – and into Taiwan and Hong Kong S.A.R. – Traditional (complex) Chinese character rights, i.e. that for each title handled by the agency there is the possibility of two contracts. Readers of Traditional Chinese have difficulties reading simplified Chinese and vice-versa. The agency also handles translation rights into Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Mongolia.
In addition to handling foreign authors in the above territories, the agency occasionally represents Chinese authors for translation rights abroad.
