English Summary/英文概要： When we were young, it was taken for granted that someone would take us to the movies. They were there waiting, and they were the big attraction in those days.
The place was large, dark and crowded with strangers: I am talking about a movie theatre or a cinema, which was the first version of the wide world some of us knew. It was a landscape and a dreamscape, and there was always the brisk newsreel to keep you up with things . The cinema was momentous, so there was an assumption that the young needed to be looked after there that heeded several possible threats. Many theatres were deemed unhealthy. You heard of “flea-pits” and “bug-hutches” and the possibility that one might “pick up” something there. I don’t know how parental company was supposed to ward off infection, but that was the rationale and the warning was truer than anyone suspected.
