In March 1957, John Lennon (then aged only 16) formed a skiffle group with friends from Quarry Bank school in Liverpool. Known as The Blackjacks and then The Quarrymen, the group went through various changes until, in June 1962, they made their first record for the EMI label under the name of The Beatles. They had their first Number 1 hit in January 1963 with “Please Please Me”, and for the rest of the 1960s they were the most important band in the world.
The Beatles helped to transform popular music, making it part of a wider culture of youth and rebellion, and recorded sublime singles and albums—the albums in particular made “pop” music a genre for all ages and classes to enjoy. The Beatles Day by Day follows the group through this astonishing and turbulent period of unmatched success (they are still the bestselling band in history), ending at the breakup of the band in 1970—when Paul McCartney publicly announced he was leaving in April and, after legal wrangling, the formal breakup occurred in January 1975. The Beatles Day by Day includes details of the recording sessions, the tours, and the major incidents in their personal lives. Panels and sidebars list all the tracks they recorded, and contain first-hand accounts from those who were fans and those who worked with them.
