CODEBREAKER: THE HISTORY OF SECRET COMMUNICATION

Solving riddles and piecing together puzzles has fascinated and entertained us for thousands of years and with the recent phenomenonal successes of Sudoku and The Da Vinci Code, codes and puzzles look set to remain a part of everyone’s life – whether as a fiendish part of newspaper appeal or to protect state secrets and the lives of millions Most tantalizing is the allure of the unsolved codes.
The ancient Phaistos code was only cracked in 1980, but there are many more hailed as unbreakable – the magnificent Dorabella and Beale Ciphers, the Voynich manuscript – so we have created the Codebreaker challenge: to break an unbroken code.
Cryptographers are assuming increasing significance in the modern age – in war, national security, crime fighting, and commerce, the new information age has given an even greater demand for personal security and secrecy that only the new generation of codemakers can create. But are we sure the battle is won?
Codebreaker looks to the future of code and asks, “Will we find the security we so desperately seek?”

    Chinese Summary/
