After his wife dies, one of Beck’s short stories is imitated by real life when a transvestite terrorist bombs a brothel in Amsterdam—and Beck comes to a belated epiphany. The Asylum Seeker is lurid and graphic, and its black humor, comparable to Michel Houellebecq’s, is at once wicked and heartbreaking. This novel is by far Grunberg’s most mature and philosophical work. A surprisingly sensitive departure from his earlier novels, The Asylum Seeker’s depth and provocative introspection are as beautiful as they are sorrowful.
