May. End of the world. It’s a long way from here. Two women come here, leaving their previous lives behind. But they are not greeted by an idyllic reality. Róża is ill, and her husband, in order to save her, slowly dismantles the order that he has built throughout his life.

Maja is affected by a change that is difficult to tame. The visitors cannot, or perhaps do not want to, prevent the inevitable catastrophe that is slowly spreading to the entire village. Memories mix with the here and now, human with animal, concern with fury. The living desperately opposes death.

Małgorzata Lebda’s spare, sensual novel combines sensitivity to nature, of which humans are a part, with linguistic mastery. The author creates a multi-layered story about the power of the elements, greed for life and the private cosmos in a moment of trial.

Maj. Koniec świata. Stąd wszędzie jest daleko. Dwie kobiety przyjeżdżają tu, zostawiając za sobą dotychczasowe życie. Ale nie wita ich sielska rzeczywistość. Róża choruje, a jej mąż, by ją ratować, powoli rozmontowuje porządek, który konstruował całe życie.

Maja dotyka zmiana, którą trudno oswoić. Przyjezdne nie mogą, a może nie chcą, zapobiec nieuchronnej katastrofie, powoli rozprzestrzeniającej się na całą wieś. Wspomnienia mieszają się z tym, co tu i teraz, ludzkie ze zwierzęcym, troska z furią. Żywe rozpaczliwie sprzeciwia się śmierci.
